Tasmanian schools have already been hit hard by the Green-Labor Government and 48 are under continued threat of closure as a result of the government’s ongoing mismanagement.
Reports today* of modelling undertaken by Mr McKim’s own department, show that under the Gonksi funding proposal, 81 Tasmanian government and Catholic schools would be worse off, with some losing as much as $979,315. That would mean less teachers, larger classes, less subject choice and poorer facilities.
Mr McKim must immediately rule out any Tasmanian school being worse off under the proposed funding changes -changes that under this modelling, may cripple dozens of Tasmanians schools.
The Minister has been too tricky by half on the Gonski reforms: he happily calls for more federal funding, while simultaneously reducing the Tasmanian spend on the education portfolio. It was bad enough that when the Opposition first asked him about Tasmania’s submission to the Gonski review, he didn’t even know it was happening.
Mr McKim needs to explain when he first became aware that the Gonski proposal would disadvantage 81 Tasmanian schools, what he is going to do to ensure they do not suffer crippling funding losses and what the Tasmanian Government has committed to the Federal Government with respect to the Gonski proposals.
The Tasmanian school community, its teachers, students and their families have been put through enough at the hands of this Minister and it’s time he took a stand and guaranteed that they will not be further disadvantaged by Green-Labor Government funding cuts.
