Today I am able to assure Winnaleah residents that cross-government action has been taken to work with TasWater to address the elevated lead level found in the local water supply.

TasWater identified the contamination and has advised residents of alternative water sources.

It is important for residents to be assured that lead levels have been regularly tested, and have been at safe levels until now.

The water supply has been switched over to the same drinking water supplied to Derby and Herrick.

While the most recent sample taken on 17 March shows lead levels have fallen back down to within water quality guidelines, the alternative water supply will remain in place at least for now.

I have asked staff from the office of Population Health Services to make themselves available to residents to discuss any specific health concerns.  Population Health Services can be contacted on 1800 671 738.

I will also consult with my colleague the Minister for Environment to determine if there is any assistance that can be provided in identifying the source of the lead in the water supply.
