As Minister for Information Technology, I would like to reassure Tasmanians that my advice is that data and voice traffic currently carried on the Basslink fibre will not be lost during repairs to Basslink.

The Government has been in close contact with Basslink and internet service providers to prepare for the likelihood of the fibre being cut during repair work to Basslink.

Tasmania currently has three cables – all of which, including the Basslink fibre, are currently fully operational.

My advice is that providers are collaborating effectively and that services using the Basslink fibre will be migrated to the remaining two fibre bundles owned by Telstra during the period of the Basslink repair.

The Government will continue to remain in close contact with Basslink and internet service providers to ensure connectivity throughout this period.
