Waverley community has been conned

The Bartlett Labor government has failed to properly consult and respect the wishes of the Waverley Primary School community in its rush to merge the school with St Leonards Primary School.

I have been contacted by several parents of WPS students who are angry at the way the merger has been promoted and so-called ‘ballots’ counted.

Clearly, counting unreturned ballots as a ‘yes’ vote is a rort.

The Liberals’ $30 million plan to fix our education system: Statement from Will Hodgman and Sue Napier

A Hodgman Liberal Government will raise education standards by overhauling Tasmania Tomorrow and investing $30 million in revitalising our high schools, focussing on results, and providing more support to our students and teachers.

Under a Hodgman Liberal Government, there will be no more experimentation with our childrens’ education.

We will overhaul Tasmania Tomorrow based on strong feedback from teachers, students, parents, industry, and the community that Labor has got it wrong.

A Plastic Shopping Bag Free Tasmania

What the Tasmanian Liberals will do:   Make Tasmania free of non-biodegradable plastic shopping bags within two years.

Coles Bay on Tasmania’s East Coast was the first town in Australia to go “plastic shopping bag free” and a Hodgman Liberal Government will move to remove non-biodegradable plastic shopping bags from across Tasmania.

Why this policy is needed
Plastic shopping bags are a common source of litter and contamination both on land and in our waterways.

Making our roads safer

Tasmanian roads are the most deadly in Australia. Think about that for a moment: “The most deadly roads in Australia”. The national road fatality rate for 2008 was 6.85 deaths per 100,000 people. In Tasmania last year the rate was 12.8 deaths per 100,000 people. That’s almost double.

Liberals to safeguard and invest in new health services with RFDS

The Royal Flying Doctor Service base at Launceston Airport is a vital part of the northern Tasmanian community and health system and must not be downgraded or moved south. In 2007-08, the Flying Doctors helped 1,654 patients. But last September we discovered that the Bartlett Labor Government had the highly-respected RFDS in its sights – considering abolition of the fixed wing service and/or relocating the air retrieval base to Hobart.

Australian Technical College on the brink of salvation

The State Government’s last-minute change in attitude to support the ATC is welcome and, if properly followed through, would allow a successful training model to strengthen the state’s education system.

Why our youth are opposing the premier

Late on a Friday afternoon in November, after most news items from the day had been put to bed, with little fanfare it was revealed that the State and Federal Labor Governments have done a deal to abolish the Australian Technical College Northern Tasmania. (The news just happened to coincide with the announcement of the end of a Federal MP’s career, a big story).
