A new nurse call system that will improve the level of care offered to patients is being installed at the Launceston General Hospital.

As part of the Hodgman Government’s $950,000 call system upgrade across a number of surgical wards, work is already complete on Ward 5A and Ward 5B is set to begin on Monday, October 10.
The hospital call system is the primary means of communication between the nurses or assistants and the patient.

There are a variety of current systems in place at the LGH, however they require an upgrade due to ongoing maintenance and difficulty sourcing parts.

The new system will be standardised and is the latest in technology with an integrated internet protocol (IP) based interface.

This will allow the hospital to have an integrated healthcare communications platform that will not only improve patient-nurse communication but also emergency response, workflow and staff safety.

The upgrade includes IT infrastructure, replacement of call points, handsets, over door lights and annunciators, as well as the ability to use the room TVs and give patients control of the display and volume.

Works also include the existing hospital duress alarm system.

Wards to get the call system upgrade include the Women’s and Children’s – 4O, 4B, 4N, 4K and Rehabilitation – 3R, as well as other areas such as Allied Health, Radiology and the Renal Unit.

The Government is committed to reforming the health system and upgrades such as this will contribute to providing the best level of care to Tasmanians.
