The George Town Municipality and surrounding areas will be the first region to benefit from the Tasmanian Government’s strategic growth initiative, with up to $1 million to be invested in projects that support jobs, skills and training, and business and community growth.
With a strong focus on unlocking the potential of our regions, the Hodgman majority Liberal Government will work with existing groups in George Town to drive improved economic and social outcomes.
The Tasmanian economy is the fastest growing in Australia and our businesses are the most confident, but we know there is more work to do to make sure more Tasmanians, in more regions, benefit.
With nearly 16,000 Tasmanian jobs created since the Tasmanian Liberal Government came to office in 2014, 1600 more small businesses and a record 250,900 Tasmanians now in work, it’s imperative we maintain this strong momentum and create even more jobs in our regions.
That’s why we’ve decided to prioritise George Town and its surrounding region as the first major recipient of our Strategic Growth funding.
This involves partnering with the community and learning from them to identify the needs of the community, to remove barriers and ensure the economy works for everyone. It involves working closely with the excellent and engaged local community leaders in George Town, as well as with jobs and training providers to support initiatives that increase participation in the workforce and the community.
The focus will be on delivering a more integrated, coordinated and place-based Government service delivery.
The strategic growth framework is the start of a new way of government and the community working together. We will take our lead from the community about what their priorities are for this funding. An action plan will be developed about those priorities and submitted to government.
