The Tasmanian and Australian Governments are working together to deliver major infrastructure projects to make our roads safer, ease congestion, improve travel times and support thousands of jobs.
We welcome the Morrison Government’s announcement that it will provide funding for new congestion busting projects in the 2021-22 Federal Budget, as well as work with us on delivering the intergenerational infrastructure included in our plan to Secure Tasmania’s future.
This commitment, along with the Tasmanian Liberals’ election commitment to invest $416.5 million over the next seven years in road infrastructure, will mean safer travel, reduced traffic congestion and travel time, as well as thousands of jobs for Tasmanians.
We know traffic congestion at the Algona Road roundabout has increased, following rapid and significant population growth in the Kingborough area.
The Australian Government’s commitment to provide $48 million, on top of our $12 million commitment, will bring this important $60 million project to fruition, delivering a grade separated interchange at the Algona Roundabout, and duplication of the Kingston Bypass from Algona Road to the Huon Highway.
Our $55 million four-lane upgrade of the South Arm Highway (between Pass Road and Oakdowns), including a bypass of the Rokeby commercial area is also secured, with the Australian Government committing $44 million for the project, in addition to the Tasmanian Government’s $11 million.
The Federal Budget will also include $37.8 million for Midland Highway upgrades at Campbell Town, $36.4 million at Oatlands, and $35.7 million at Ross, which will build on the success of our $565 million Midland Highway 10 Year Action Plan.
Further commitments from the Australian Government include:
- $80 million for the Tasmanian Roads Package – Bass Highway Safety and Freight Efficiency Upgrades Package – Future Priorities;
- An additional $24 million for the Port of Burnie Shiploader upgrade, providing a total of $64 million to deliver a dedicated modern bulk mineral loading facility that is a priority for the industry; and
- $13.2 million for the Huon Link Road.
As soon as the new Government is commissioned, we’ll waste no time in getting on with business and continuing to roll out our massive roads and bridges infrastructure pipeline, supporting Tasmanian jobs.
