After the horrors of October 7, 2023, it was wonderful news today (at long last) to achieve a negotiated ceasefire in Israel to secure the release of the hostages.

There has been such a tragic loss of innocent lives – on both sides of the conflict.

The deliberate cruelty of planned murders, rape and kidnapping of innocent Israelis have etched trauma into the lives of countless families. I have friends here in Australia who have been impacted. It’s been felt across the globe.

October 7 was an historically cruel act of terrorism and did nothing to advance any legitimate cause. Thankfully, at least, Hamas and Hezbollah have been massively weakened.

Barbarism and terrorism should never be tolerated or appeased. I’m sorry Australia did not hold firm in our resolve at the UN as the USA did; and that there wasn’t a stronger, more defiant local political response to the anti-Semitic demonstrations and vandalism in Sydney and Melbourne.

Peace doesn’t start with politicians at the UN or a diplomatic negotiating table. It begins in family homes, schools, churches, sports clubs, businesses and local communities. It begins with us.

We must strive for peace.

Hope for tomorrow. ??
