Statement from Michael Ferguson

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Peter Partridge. I had the privilege of knowing and working with Peter for more than 20 years across my roles in both federal and state government.

Peter was a dedicated public servant—first as Mayor and later as a long-serving councillor on Dorset Council—and he was always a pleasure to work with. He cared deeply about his community and was passionate about ensuring that a small region like Dorset was strongly represented at all levels of government.

He worked tirelessly to support the infrastructure and services that help communities thrive, from the local hospital and aged care services to schools, roads and recreational facilities. Peter wanted all ages—from the youngest to the oldest—to enjoy the best possible lifestyle in Dorset, and he devoted himself to making that a reality.

One of my favourite memories of Peter was the day we opened a new bridge together. In true Peter style, he brought humour and theatre to the occasion, staging a ribbon-cutting with a sword while riding a toy horse—his own playful nod to Captain De Groot at the Sydney Harbour Bridge opening. It was classic Peter: joyful, irreverent, and entirely community-spirited.

Peter is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Lesley, and their children and grandchildren, to whom I extend my heartfelt condolences. Dorset has lost a great advocate, and Peter’s legacy of service will be long remembered.
