The Tasmanian Government will increase protections for the State’s war memorials.

Liberal Member for Bass, Michael Ferguson, said recent incidents of vandalism in Tasmania and interstate were a stark reminder that threats to these sacred sites are real and growing.

“The recent desecration of the St Helens War Memorial has shocked Tasmanians,” Mr Ferguson said.

“This was not just an attack on a piece of stone; but an attack on the memory of those who gave their lives to defend our nation and our way of life.

“The RSL has called on governments around the country to take action to protect war memorials and increase penalties for those caught defacing and desecrating them.

“A Bill will be introduced which will deliver tougher sentences to deter those who would seek to attack our war memorials.

“Preliminary work has commenced, and a Bill will be introduced into Parliament as soon as possible.

Mr Ferguson said the Bill will also seek to introduce restitution and meaningful community service.

“It was only through the generosity of a Tasmanian small business that the St Helens Memorial was restored so quickly,” Mr Ferguson said.

“It should be offenders footing the bill for repairs, not local councils or RSLs.

“Offenders should undertake Community Service in the effected community.

“These laws will ensure our memorials are treated with the respect they deserve, now and for future generations.”
