When a driver uses their vehicle to intimidate or harm someone else on Tasmanian roads, that’s a serious and dangerous offence, not just expressing frustration. In Parliament, I spoke in support of the Police Offences Amendment Bill and the need to strengthen our laws to better protect Tasmanians.
My speech this afternoon outlines why reform to Tasmania’s Police Offences Act is necessary and timely.
Key points include:
• The creation of a clear, standalone offence for road rage
• Stronger penalties for hooning and dangerous driving
• The importance of deterrence and personal responsibility
• Ensuring victims feel that justice has been done
• A clear standard of behaviour: respect for others, particularly women and vulnerable people
Road safety is about real people, real families, and real consequences. If we want safer roads and stronger communities, our laws must be clear, firm and effective. I congratulate Minister Ellis for this bill before Parliament and encourage all upper house MLCs to support it when it comes before them.
